My data science background began with my PhD in data-intensive astronomy, which I received from Lancaster University in 2022. I was introduced to machine learning and data science methods to help prepare for the big data challenges expected from upcoming telescope surveys, including the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. My work was in the context of observational cosmology and involved optimising training for photometric classification of supernovae. Partway through my PhD I had my first experience with deep learning technology during an internship at the European Southern Observatory. This project used a purely data-driven approach to better understand stellar spectra. Since my PhD I have worked as a data analyst at 43 Clicks North, a digital marketing agency in my hometown of Hull (UK) and I am soon to start a position as a data scientist at the University of Hull. My work here will involve building AI technology in a network of assisted living devices in the adult care sector.
